Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) also known as First aid for mental health, both are an internationally recognised training course that is equipped and designed to teach people and give them the tools to spot the signs and symptoms of mental ill health and provide help on a first aid basis.  Due to some of the sensitive topics of the course candidates need to be made aware that some candidates can find certain segments of the course challenging, although our tutors help whole class to feel safe and comfortable.

In the past year in the UK alone, 74 percent of people have felt so stressed they have been overwhelmed or unable to cope. Being able to recognise the signs of mental health early will enable you and your organisation to support their own brain health and the wellbeing of colleagues.

What will you learn?

The MHFA Level 2 Course is split into the following sections:

  • What is Mental Health?
  • Roles and Responsibilities – Associated Topics in Depth.
  • Mental Health Stigma.
  • Mental Health Continuum Model.
  • Early Warning Signs.
  • Stress – Associated Topics in Depth – Associated Topics in Depth.
  • Mental Health Conditions – Associated Topics in Depth.

Mental Health First Aiders are trained to:

  • Spot the early signs and symptoms of mental ill health.
  • Start a supportive conversation with a colleague who may be experiencing a mental health issue or emotional distress.
  • Listen to the person non-judgementally.
  • Assess the risk of suicide or self-harm.
  • Encourage the person to access appropriate professional support or self-help strategies. This might include encouraging access to internal support systems such as EAPs or in-house counselling services.
  • Escalate to the appropriate emergency services, if necessary.
  • Maintain confidentiality as appropriate.
  • Complete critical incident documents as and when necessary.
  • Protect themselves while performing their role.

How the Course Is Delivered?

The course will equip you with the necessary skills to recognise signs of mental ill health, an understanding of common mental health issues, and knowledge of how to support positive wellbeing.  This course is widely available at all our training centres, under the guidance of our specialist Mental Health First Aid at Work trainers. Using the latest training technique, it maximises learner recall and confidence and meets HSE Regulations.

Certification

MHFA – Mental Health First Aid – does not expire.  However, we recommend that you attend this course every 3 years to refresh your skills. However, we recommend that you attend an upskill course every year to refresh your skills.  Issuing of certification, as part of our environmental policy and conscientious effort to lower the impact on the environment, all certificates will be available as a link and PDF download on completion, this will be sent to you. Our e-certificates are valid certification and accepted by all governing bodies and accreditations centres.  But, if you require a physical copy we are more than happy to send one out to you.

Requirements

Candidates have a good understanding of spoken and written English. While we are often able to provide support to people who do not have English as a first language, our ability to do so is limited by the time available and the number of people who require assistance. We may be able to make special arrangements if requested in advance. Please contact us if you need any guidance.  Candidates do not need to have prior learning or experience in this qualification.

What to bring on the day?

Candidates are required to bring Photo ID in order that they may take the exam. This can either be a Passport or a Driving License.
