Anyone can be affected by a mental health condition either themselves or a family member, friend, or colleague.  First Aid for Mental Health Awareness also known as Mental Health First Aid is an internationally recognised training course, designed to teach people how to spot the signs and symptoms of mental ill health and provide help on a first aid basis.  In the past year in the UK alone, 74 percent of people have felt so stressed they have been overwhelmed or unable to cope.  Being able to recognise the signs of mental health early will enable you and your organisation to provide the necessary support required.

This course covers the content of the Level 1 course (A ½-Day course aimed at providing learners with the knowledge to identify suspected mental health conditions and the skills to start a conversation and be able to signpost the person towards professional help) but also expands on the effects of drugs and alcohol, incorporates the First Aid for Mental Health Action Plan, and covers ways in which a positive mental health culture can be supported within a workplace.

How the Course Is Delivered?

The course will equip you with the necessary skills to recognise signs of mental ill health, an understanding of common mental health issues, and knowledge of how to support positive wellbeing.  This course is widely available at all our training centres, under the guidance of our specialist Mental Health First Aid at Work trainers. Using the latest training technique, it maximises learner recall and confidence and meets HSE Regulations.  Our training is available in several formats, we offer the essential training you want in many ways to suit your needs.

Certification

This course ensures that you meet recommendations underlined by the HSE and provides you with the skills, knowledge, and confidence to use what you have learned in a real emergency.  Independent research and evaluation show that taking part in an MHFA course:

  • MHFA course raises awareness and mental health literacy.
  • MHFA course reduces stigma around mental ill health and feel confident guiding people towards appropriate support.
  • MHFA course boosts knowledge and confidence in dealing with mental health issues.
  • MHFA course encourages people to start a conversation with a person who may be experiencing a mental health issue.
  • MHFA course promotes early intervention which enables recovery.

Upon successful completion of the qualification assessment, Learners will be awarded the Ofqual regulated Level 1 Award in Awareness of First Aid for Mental Health (RQF)/Award in Awareness of First Aid for Mental Health at SCQF Level 4. This qualification expires on the 3 years anniversary after successfully completing and being issued the certification.  However, we recommend that you attend an upskill course every year to refresh your skills.

Issuing of certification, as part of our environmental policy and conscientious effort to lower the impact on the environment, all certificates will be available as a link and PDF download on completion, this will be sent to you. Our e-certificates are valid certification and accepted by all governing bodies and accreditations centres.  But, if you require a physical copy we are more than happy to send one out to you.

A maximum of 16 students can be accommodated on this course and all candidates must be a minimum of 14 years of age to qualify.

Requirements

Candidates have a good understanding of spoken and written English. While we are often able to provide support to people who do not have English as a first language, our ability to do so is limited by the time available and the number of people who require assistance. We may be able to make special arrangements if requested in advance. Please contact us if you need any guidance.  Candidates do not need to have prior learning or experience in this qualification.

What to bring on the day?
